Artist Couple: Garry Cohen  ~ Cherrie La Porte Cohen & their Hot Shop

Hot Glass Studio  Garry’s Hot Glass Studio is centrally located near the city of Escondido within the beautiful country setting of  Del Dios at Lake Hodges.  The shop consists of two glass benches, two glory holes and a 300 lb glass furnace and two large holding kilns.

Garry Cohen has been on the leading edge of the exciting revitalization of studio art glass in San Diego.  Cohen has been crafting his remarkable glass art for over 28 years and is recognized for his lively colors and sculptural quality of his pieces.  Garry’s rich, deep colors and an imaginative flair for design have helped make a name for him as accomplished glass craftsmen.

Garry and Cherrie La Porte Cohen have created “Glass Ranch” at their residence in Escondido with a hot shop, two glass studios, a sculpture garden and a glass gallery. Their country setting in Escondido allows for a flexible schedule and the freedom to be creative in a natural, beautiful environment.  They encourage guests and collectors to come and visit a live working artist’s environment with their art on display year around.

Garry has been a tremendous asset to the glass community, especially in San Diego County as an artist and a glass educator.  For the past 9 years he has directed the glass blowing program at Palomar College.  As a glass instructor he has taught many professional glass blowing artists who have participated in the Palomar College glass program and continues to introduce many students to the art of blown glass from his personal studio. His work has been collected locally and internationally.  He has been featured on two HGTV shows for his unusual Rooster Teapots and his off beat Glass Ranch.  He has also been selected to design public art for the Jewish Academy where he created custom glass candle flames for their ten foot menorah. His work has been featured in TEAPOTS Makers and Collectors book by Dona Z. Meilach as well as other publications.

You will be able to see this glass craftsman giving glass blowing demonstrations with his assistants during his open studio tours and sales featuring his new art creations. These sales are held twice a year during the months of April and November.
